Filling Governance Voids

A case of NCAA and Intercollegiate Athletics.

When authority collapses,

institutions reshape because people rebuild.

Drawing on interviews with

Faculty Athletic Representatives

in the Big 10, SEC, and ACC,

We identify four mechanisms of rebuilding from governance rubble

1. storytelling for sense-making,

2. building trust and cooperation through relational dialogic ,

3. organizing to create dynamic capabilities,

4. establishing norms of legitimacy.
